HAITI EARTHQUAKE APPEAL

A devastating earthquake measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale struck
Haiti earlier this month, killing thousands and affecting the lives
of up to three million people. Children, women and the elderly are
most vulnerable in this kind of crisis. It is a hugely traumatic
experience for any child to go through, and we have to make sure
we get help and protection to them as fast as possible.

Chariots For Children are working with Muslim Hands and other UK
based charity organisatons, who have already sent disaster relief
teams to Haiti and started working on the ground. Below are some
simple options for donating to help those who desperately need it.
What your money could buy:

* £15 can provide hygiene kits for two families
* £20 for 3 tarpaulins or plastic sheets to provide basic shelter
* £40 for 24 buckets to help families carry clean water
* £42 can provide temporary shelter for a whole family
* £80 can provide meals for 20 families

Do donate whatever you can and through any reliable organisation
that is focusing on the main priorities in Haiti right now. No
amount is too small.

MESSAGE OF SUPPORT REQUIRED FOR MUSTAPHA TALEB (DETAINEE Y)

Mustapha Taleb is a 39 year old Algerian with full refugee
status. He was cleared of involvement in the ‘ricin plot’ in
April 2005 but was served a deportation notice following the
London bombings in July 2005. Mustapha has been subsequently
detained under a bail order, severely restricting his day to
day movement since 2008. He has been accused of being a threat
to national security but neither he nor his lawyer has ever
been shown the ‘secret evidence’ against him.
Following his detention in HMP Belmarsh and Long Lartin, he
was eventually released on immigration bail to an area far
removed from friends and community. He is extremely isolated
and receives little support; he is only allowed to leave his
home for four hours a day, 1 hour in the morning and 3 hours
in the afternoon, although he is not allowed to carry any money
on his person. He is also subjected to constant random searches
of his home by the police. He rarely receives Muslim visitors
and has no family in the UK. Mustapha is denied internet access,
a computer and cannot enrol on any courses on the grounds that
he will meet with other people and influence them. Mustapha has
tried to enrol with the Open University on courses that do not
involve internet use but this has been rejected by the Home Office.

Mustapha is asking you for something more precious than your money
and that is your time. Please volunteer today to help Mustapha Taleb.

“I’m being tortured in this country. I feel I’m living like a ghost.
I have less rights than animals. My life is unbearable.
Please help me.”
(Mustapha Taleb)

HELP MUSTAPHA TODAY – Write to Mustapha:

VOLUNTEER MENTORS NEEDED!

The Pathways to Citizenship project at Muslim Aid
is aimed at supporting organisations and people
who work with young Muslims to enable positive
pathways to better citizenship, remove barriers
to participation and reduce disaffection amongst
young Muslims. We work with schools, voluntary
and community organisations and individuals.

Pathways to Citizenship is looking for Muslim
volunteer mentors to work with students from
Islamic schools.

The mentor will provide young people with a positive
role model and be a source of support and guidance.
By being someone to look up to and trust, these young
people will develop and build important social skills,
benefit from your experience and knowledge and you
would be helping to enable a pathway for them to
engage with society and have the confidence to
achieve their full potential.
You will benefit by having the opportunity to help
foster positive mindsets in the next generation of
young Muslim Londoners and being a part of a
positive change in the community.

It is a long term but flexible commitment that can
be worked around a busy lifestyle, study and other
commitments. We provide the CRB check and will
cover travel expenses.

The Platform, Looking at the Muslim Community in 10 Years Time
This new and dynamic initiative is to be a youth-led blog entitled

and creatively in the interest of free speech.

The project will span 5 weeks and encompass 5 key issues during this time.
It will boast articles from leading academics, journalists and politicians

EMPOWER YOUNG MUSLIMS IN ISLINGTON

To empower young Muslims in Islington by establishing a mentoring project
that not only develops the young people but leads to positive outcomes
for the rest of the community.  Mentors will use their stories and
personal experiences to raise the aspirations of this disenfranchised
community.

Deadline : Monday 15th February 2010

To establish 20 new one-to-one mentoring relationships between
young people aged 11-14 and their peers aged 16-25.
Relationships should be focused on the needs of young
people and in essence provide a high quality mentoring
relationship. Mentors will act as role models and give
valuable lessons in a diverse range of areas from
discussing high educational attainment to dealing
with peer pressure.

Young people especially Young Muslims are alienated due to a
lack of understanding from service providers and the attention
attached to Islamaphobia. It is important to ensure that Young
Muslims play a much more active role in Islington and become
part of the solution. Many individuals are already doing
positive work but it is hardly recognised and this needs
to be challenged.

Catch22 is in a perfect position to use its expertise and
understanding to work with a group of people who are
willing to become more active in their communities but
do not know how.

****** ISLAMIC CIRCLES TALKS, DISCUSSIONS AND COURSES IN DETAIL ************

1) ISLAM AND THE REBUILDING OF LIFE IN BOSNIA

with Senad Biber & Sehija Dedovic (Sarajevo, Bosnia)

Date: Friday 19th February 2010
Time: 6.30 pm – 8.30 pm
Venue: Toynbee Hall, 28 Commercial Street, London, E1 6LS

Following the Balkans conflicts during the 1990s that devastated
the region, the countries of the former Yugoslavia have been going
through a period of reconstruction and renewal. Bosnia suffered
particularly badly during the war which left over 100,000 people
dead and nearly 2 million people displaced. It has taken a lot
of courage, effort and determination for the people to uplift
themselves and help rebuild the country. The process is still
ongoing, and the emotional scars often take much longer to heal.

Joining us this evening are two Bosnians who grew up during the
war period and have subsequently been involved in a number of
community rebuilding initiatives over the past 10 years. They
take their inspiration from the teachings of Islam and their
positive outlook has enabled them to share their experiences
with people in other parts of Europe and beyond.

Senad Biber and Sehija Dedovic have considerable experience
of working with young people and women of all ages and
backgrounds in Sarajevo. They have been serving as ambassadors
for reconciliation, peace and creative renewal, and there are
many lessons that we in the UK could learn from them. There
will be opportunities for questions and answers after the talks.

Free admission. All welcome. Nearest tube station is Aldgate East.

City Circle presents:

2) SUPPORTING YOUNG MUSLIMS – THE CASE FOR RAISING ASPIRATIONS

Speakers: Mr Khawar Mann – Mosaic and Jamie Bartlett – Demos

Date: Friday 12th February 2010
Time: 6.45 – 8.30pm
Venue: Abrar House, 45 Crawford Place, London W1H 4LP

This discussion examines the importance of raising aspirations
to improve life chances of young Muslims growing up in our most
disadvantaged communities and Mosaic’s schools mentoring programmes.

In recent years, politicians and commentators have argued for the
importance of raising aspirations of young people from BAME
communities in general and Muslim communities in particular.
Research shows that low aspirations are related to poor academic
attainment and professional achievement, regardless of social or
ethnic group. Low aspirations can also feed into a general sense
of isolation and exclusion from mainstream British life.  Despite
this, what actually works and what factors are important remain
little understood in aspiration raising programmes, even within
mentoring programmes. Mosaic, which now provides mentoring programmes
in over 50 schools across the UK, has commissioned the leading
think-tank Demos to undertake a major evaluation of its programmes
to produce a firm evidence base about what works and to set out
practical recommendations and direction for project delivery and
broader social policy.

At this event, Jamie Bartlett (senior researcher with Demos) will
outline the findings of the recently-published first results of
Mosaic’s research programme, a literature review drawing together
all relevant research on the relationship between aspirations and
socio-economic achievement and attainment and emerging evidence
on the success of mentoring and aspiration-raising programmes.
Khawar Mann, Mosaic Board member, will explain how Mosaic’s
secondary school mentoring programme connects successful
Muslims from a wide range of backgrounds with young Muslims
and their peers in deprived areas of the UK in order to
raise aspirations and provide opportunities.

7) GIVE A LITTLE RESPECT

By Dr Mamoun Mobayed

Date: Saturday 13th February 2010
Time: 10.30am – 5.30pm
Venue: Muslim World League, 4th Floor,
46 Goodge Street, London, W1T 4LU

A guide on how to improve relations with Parents
and Parents-in-law.

“Thy Lord hath decreed that ye worship none but
Him, and that ye be kind to parents. Whether
one or both of them attain old age in thy life,
say not to them a word of contempt, nor repel
them, but address them in terms of honour. ”
Surah Isra [17:23]

So many of us unfortunately fail to achieve
the standard set in this Ayah when we deal
with our parents. What are the barriers
preventing us from reaching this ideal?
Conversely others feel their lives are
completely controlled by their parents or
parents in law, so how do they redress
this imbalance?

One of the keys to removing the barriers and
readdressing the balance is to improve our
relationship with our parents / parents in
law. Utrujj invites you to this special
interactive course taught by Dr Mobayed,
a consultant psychiatrist and lecturer.
The course will focus on how to improve
our relationship with our parents /
parents in law drawing on Islamic
teachings and psychological techniques.

It’s a course which will benefit
anyone with parents!

10) BEHIND CLOSED DOORS…….WHO IS RESPONSIBLE?

Date: Saturday 13th February 2010
Time: 5.30pm
Venue: Darul Ummah, 56 Bigland Street, London E1 2ND

The community we leave in has various hidden agendas from myths,
symbolic statements and worse of all a general acceptance of
negative community issues. We fail to address or understand
that our young people are becoming lost, our sisters engaged
in teenage pregnancy, our brothers/fathers abusing the system
for financial gain, weddings in Islam have become even more
non-Islamic, social services deal with everyday domestic
violence to child abuse within Islamic families.

The community is becoming not only lost but sadly a very
bad role model for non-muslims to even consider becoming
Muslims.  This event wishes to draw out from participants
some of those hidden secrets, to divulge the symbolism
and expose the myth.

What Happens . . . Behind Closed Doors!

Teenage pregnancy – Domestic violence – High divorce rates –
Honour killing – Forced marriage – Marital dispute – Child abuse
– Identity crisis – Extremism – Drug addictions – Gang fights
– Out of education – High unemployment rates – Under achieving community.

18) FREE MUSLIMS – AUTONOMY AND CREATIVITY

Date: Tuesday 16th February 2010
Time: 10am-2pm
Venue: SOAS Brunei Gallery, 10 Thornhaugh Street
London WC1H 0XG

We know that in certain Muslim homes, children are strongly
discouraged from partaking in drama, art and music. This message
is reverberating in schools across Europe.  Fourteen hundred
years of Islamic contributions to art, culture,
literature, and history have been pushed aside in favour of a hardline
interpretation of religion that denies the legitimacy of any form of artistic
expression whatsoever.

So far, the debate on extremist ideologies has focused on politics and
theology, but the cultural side has been ignored. BMSD are organising a
half-day open conversation to explore this in further detail, with support from
the British Council. It is hugely stifling to deny so many people
especially children access to the arts and humanities, and this has
serious implications for their personal and social development.

Various artists and cultural commentators will be invited from Britain and
other parts of the world. BMSD Chair Yasmin Alibhai-Brown will chair the event,
working alongside Catherine Fieschi, Director of Counterpoint at the British
Council.

Confirmed speakers include:
Razia Iqbal, special correspondent, BBC News, and former BBC senior arts
correspondent
Tahmena Bokhari, professor, social worker and activist who won the Mrs Pakistan World
title in 2010
Saira Khan, businesswoman and former Apprentice star
Ayesha Tammy Haq, corporate lawyer and organiser of Pakistan’s Fashion Week
Joan Smith, novelist and human rights activist
Anwar Akhtar, Director of new online culture and politics magazine The
Samosa and former Director of the Richmix Cultural Centre in East London

20) EXPLANATION OF SURAH FATIR

By Sh Haythem Tamim

Date: Tuesday 16th February – 16th March 2010
Time: 6.30am – 8.30pm
Venue: Muslim World League, 4th Floor,
46 Goodge Street, London, W1T 4LU

“Oh mankind! Indeed the promise of Allah is true.
So let not the life of this world delude you, nor
let the chief deluder delude you regarding Allah ”
[Surah Fatir:5]

Surah Fatir takes its name from the opening verse,
describing Allah as ‘The Originator of the heavens
and the earth’. It tells us of the Oneness of Allah
and emphasises His absolute control over everything
that exists. It is a surah in which Allah calls us
to remember the reality of life and be aware of the
delusion of the Dunya and traps of Shaytan. It also
contains the description of the people of paradise
and hell, both in this life and in the hereafter.
Through studying these verses we can learn the
attitude and characteristics of those that please
Allah as well as those that do not, and use this
knowledge to assess and improve ourselves.

Utrujj Foundation invites you to come and learn from
this beautiful and powerful surah, in which Allah
reminds us of the reality of our existence – our
vulnerability as human beings, while reassuring
us that He is the One to turn to for strength
and success in this life and the hereafter.

The City Circle presents:

26) WHAT’S HAPPENING IN THE ISLAMIC REPUBLIC

by Professor Ali Ansari

Date: Friday 19th February 2010
Time: 6.45pm
Venue: Abrar House, 45 Crawford Place, London W1H 4LP

Since the results of Iran’s controversial presidential elections
last June, that saw the re-election of Mahmoud Ahmedinajed amidst
widespread concerns over vote rigging and subsequent crackdown on
pro-democracy protestors, a fresh spotlight has been thrown on
the workings of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Iran became an ‘Islamic State’ in 1979 when some of the ulema (clerics)
took control and Shariah became state law, a law whose ultimate
arbitrator is the unelected Supreme Leader and his appointed ulema.

The Islamist regime accuses the opposition of being agents of
America, Britain and Israel, the opposition meanwhile maintain
theirs is a grassroots movement and accuse the government of
brutally killing and torturing protestors. Iran’s Islamic
government is opposed by many Iranian ulema who accuse it
of being a religious tyranny.

So what is really going on in the Islamic Republic? The Islamic
government claims to be a democracy but how democratic can an
Islamic state really be when ulema, and not the people, are
sovereign? And with its old enemies Saddam and the Talban gone,
what of Iran’s growing regional influence? Both Israel and Saudi
Arabia are opposed to what they see as Iran’s menacing behaviour
in their backyards. Has the regime missed an opportunity to
respond positively to President Obama’s conciliatory tone? Is
the likelihood of a military strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities
rising or diminishing? And would an attack simply consolidate
the hardliners and allow them to crush the internal democratic
movement even further?

To help us unravel these questions we are very pleased to have
one of the world’s leading authorities on Iran, Professor Ali
Ansari of St Andrews University, where he is Professor of
Iranian History.

27) ISLAMIC HISTORY OF AFRICA, ANDALUS, AMERICA

By Dr. Abdullah Hakim Quick

Date: Friday February 19th – 28th 2010
Venue: London

History is often told from the perspective of the conqueror:
Ancient maps depicting exaggerated sizes of the European continent;
stories told from a Euro-centric perspective; significant chunks in
timelines distorted or removed entirely to cover up empowering truths.

The timely discovery of a shocking untold story finally unravels
in AlMaghrib Institute’s unparalleled double-weekend seminar
The world will never look the same as you uncover its secrets thought
to have long been lost.

Why even study history? Truly understanding where we come from and the
achievements of Muslims before us strengthens our resolve in the face
of global and individual trials and tribulations. Extracting lessons
with a learned teacher from our very rich history paves the road for
fruitful future for our Ummah, inshaAllah.

Re-establish the bond with your noble ancestry and reconnect with
those who walked these Western lands so long ago.
