A CRIME scene investigator is suspected of falsifying “thousands” of lab test results.

Police believe Mariem Megalla, 57, took so many short-cuts that New York criminal convictions stretching back years are in question.

Police face the enormous task of re-testing “hundreds, maybe thousands, of cases”. Unlike characters in TV drama CSI:NY, who work round the clock, the NYPD ­scientist is accused of taking “short-cuts” to ensure she went home on time.

A source said: “There could well be innocent people sitting in jail as a result of falsified lab tests.”
