OPEN CASTING FOR MUSLIM ACTRESS FOR 'HEARTS & MINDS' BY KHAYAAL TC

Khayaal Theatre Company is looking for a young Muslim woman with a keen
interest in acting for the autumn tour of its acclaimed production of
"Hearts and Minds." The play explores issues of citizenship, identity and
belonging, and has been touring schools, colleges, community centres and
prisons since 2008. It has also been performed at St. Ethelburga's, The
British Museum and the House of Commons.

Although this is a professional tour we are not expecting the actress to
necessarily have had professional experience, but it is essential that she
has considerable talent and is prepared to have a professional attitude to
the work.

There are three cast members in the play all of whom play numerous roles.
The actress we are seeking would be playing the roles of both Aisha and Ms
Hussain.

Aisha is a confident, feisty, opinionated, fifteen year old. She wears her
Islam as a badge, and follows a fierce and narrow interpretation of Islam.
With ambitions of becoming a lawyer she feels she is on a mission to fight
the injustices she sees being done to Muslims.

Ms. Hussain, is her teacher, a highly educated, integrated and cultivated
woman in her early 30's. She is a visionary, in whom the dream of virtue is
alive. She is inspired by her love of Allah and her mission to guide her
pupils along the path towards their highest potential. As various roles are
played it is essential that the actress has a good ear for accents.

The play runs for one hour and is usually performed to year 9/10 students. A
workshop or a Q&A often follows performances. This provides cast members
with a valuable opportunity to be a positive role model for their young
audiences.

The autumn tour will run between 4 to 6 weeks and will then be filmed. A
3-week rehearsal period will need to commence in the last week of Ramadan.
The role is professionally remunerated and will involve substantial time
commitment and UK travel. Auditions will take place during the 15 June-15
July '10 period.

To find out more about the Khayaal Theatre Company and our production of
"Hearts and Minds," please visit our website www.khayaal.co.uk or you can
find us on Facebook.

Please contact us by sending your email to info@khayaal.co.uk

WOULD YOU LIKE TO HELP A DISABLED MUSLIM CHILD?

There are many places that offer activities for children with
special needs. However, many of these are not culturally specific
for Muslim children and are not within an Islamic atmosphere.
Salaam has been organising activities for children in various
schemes in Barnet since Feb 2009. We have qualified staff who
are well experienced with all manner of disability and will be
able to advise accordingly, however we do need more Muslims to
volunteer and work and play with the children. We also run other,
mainstream, activity schemes which are fully inclusive for all
abilities. No qualifications are necessary and full training
would be given. Aside from the great spiritual reward, this is
an ideal opportunity to broaden your horizons and experience.

MYH VOLUNTEERS REQUIRED FOR PRISON CAMPAIGN

Once again, we are running the prison campaign this year. We plan to send
out 4,000 Eid gifts to Muslim prisoners this Ramadhan. Together with this,
we wish to raise awareness and support for these prisoners. In order for
this to happen we require volunteers to fulfil the following roles.

Publicity
A big part of this project is to make people around UK, aware of the
situation of the prisoners. A large percentage of the prisoners go
back to prison for re-offending because of lack of support. We want
people around UK to be aware of this fact and ask them to support
prisoners in any way they can. I would like volunteers to help
distribute pamphlets and other publicity materials to brothers
and sisters in the community. This may include giving out leaflets
at mosque or going to shops to give out the leaflets.

Fund Raising
As this campaign is purely funded by sponsors and through donation,
we require volunteers to help research and help raise funds. This
may include going to mosques and other places and asking people to
donate to the campaign. A good example being collection after
Jumaah prayers on Fridays.

Web Designing
We require people to be able to update the MYH website in order
that we can promote the prison campaign and make people more aware.

Messages of Support
As part of the Eid gift, we would like to include individual
messages of support to the prisoners. For this, we will require
4,000 messages to be written. We require volunteers to get these
messages by possibly asking students from universities, schools
or mosques to write these messages.

Packing of gifts
Around 100 volunteers are needed during the second weekend of Ramadhan
to help us pack the Eid gifts to send to the prisoners.

If you can volunteer in any way possible please contact me
on prison.campaign@myh.org.uk .

SURVEY OF MALE MUSLIM PROFESSIONALS IN UK

Unitas Communications, in conjunction with the FATIMA Women’s Network, has
designed a study targeting male Muslim professionals in the UK to gather
information on their beliefs and practices regarding Muslim women.
This survey is incredibly important as it provides an opportunity to
understand the thinking of male British Muslims on these issues and to
expose the pertinent information we expect the study to reveal to the
larger British community and to top media outlets.

We cannot accomplish our goal of insightful and independent research
without your help. We ask that you click the following link (UNITAS
and FATIMA Survey) and provide your answers, which will be submitted
anonymously, and also forward this email along to friends, family members,
or colleagues who fall into the category of male Muslim professionals
living in the UK. The survey will only remain open for one week’s time,

JOURNALIST LOOKING FOR WOMEN WHO WEAR BURQA

I am a freelance journalist writing a story
for the women’s magazine Stylist (www.stylist.co.uk).

We would like to interview a woman who chooses to wear the burqa, to
explore the reasons behind her decision and the impact it has on her life.
We do not have any agenda with this story, just a genuine desire to explore
one women’s experience. It will be written in the woman’s own words, and will
of course be dealt with in a completely fair and balanced way.

I am happy to discuss any questions you might have about this feature, and
hope that we can work together on exploring an issue that is so often
misrepresented.

Redbridge Islamic Centre presents:

FAMILY HALAQA’S - THE 10 PROMISED JANNAH SERIES

Dates: Every Saturday during May - July 2010
Time: 7:15pm
venue: Redbridge Islamic Centre, 179 Eastern Avenue, IG4 5AW

Every Saturday we will be covering the virtues, sacrifice, and
determination this great generation Allah blessed and promised
Jannah to them while they were alive.

Ibn Masood (ra) said: Allah looked in to the hearts of His servants
and found the heart of Muhammad to be the best of them so He sent
him with His message. Then He looked at the hearts of His servants
other than Muhammad and found the hearts of his companions to be
the best hearts of His servants so He chose them to accompany His
Prophet and to support His religion. Whatever the Muslims view to
be good then it is good in the sight of Allah and whatever the
Muslims view to be evil then it is evil in the sight of Allah

Date: Saturday 22nd May 2010
Time: 5.30 pm (after Asr prayer)
Venue: South Harrow Massala, 290 Northolt Road, Harrow, Middx, HA2 8EB

When we define the word great we often affiliate it with a state
of superiority affecting a person, object or place; a concept
that compares similar types and determines that which has a clear
and perceivable advantage or even a descriptive term applied to
a person. World leaders, sports men, personalties, art, planes,
trains, walls, automobiles, buildings, landscapes, planets, solar
systems, universes or even Tony the tiger are just some things
that come to mind when we think of something great. However this
is a false notion of greatness holding no substance when compared
to the vast and infinite Greatness of the Lord of the worlds, the
Lord of mankind, jinn and all that exists.

Deveolp your understanding and know your Creator. Join us for soul
shaking and Emaan boosting lecture on the Greatness of Allah. The
venue is located behind Iceland. Muslims and people of other faiths
or none are all welcome.

Date: Sunday 23rd May 2010
Time: 5.45pm - 8pm
Venue: Abrar House, 45 Crawford place, W1H 4LP

The City Circle is pleased to present an evening of discussion and music with
Salman Ahmad, one of South Asia's most influential cultural figures.

Salman Ahmad and his rock band, Junoon, have for decades been South Asia's
biggest
and most successful rock musicians and have been outspoken on the role of music
in
tackling extremism and creating healing and peace. As shown in the BBC/Wide
Angle
documentary in 2003 'The Rock Star and the Mullahs', Salman confronted clerics
in
a madrassah in northern Pakistan about the mistaken perception that Islam
prohibits
music. He has popularised a blend of western rock and Islamic music called 'Sufi
rock'
that has been hailed as a cultural bridge within South Asia and between the
'East' and 'West'. He will be discussing his new book Rock and Roll Jihad: a
Muslim Rock
Star's Revolution (published by Simon and Schuster, 2010) and wider issues on
the current
state of Pakistan, as well as, playing a few acoustic tracks. Copies of Rock and
Roll
Jihad and CDs will be on sale for cash only.

All welcome. Free Entrance and no need to pre-book. Spaces on a first come
first
serve basis.

Date: Monday 24th May 2010
Time: 9.00 am - 4.30 pm
Venue: Friend's House, 173-177 Euston Road, London, NW1 2BJ

The latest data published on use of the Mental Health Act in
England for 2008-2009 from the Mental Health Minimum Data Set
shows that the rates of detention via the Mental Health Act
have increased steeply (The NHS Information Office 2009).
This report shows that 31.8% of service users receiving care
on in-patient units were detained under the Mental Health Act.
This is a greater number than in previous years. The data also
showed that 53.8% of the "Black" and "Black British" group
who were in-patients, spent some time detained compulsorily
in comparison to 31.8% overall. The over representation of
certain Black and Minority Ethnic Groups within in-patient
services is not new.

This one day event will focus on exploring the following
questions: How should we interpret these findings? Is racism
the main issue behind the fact that some BME groups are over
represented in terms of admission and detention rates and
also the increased use of certain diagnostic categories such
as schizophrenia? Should we be focusing on understanding and
learning why certain BME groups are not over represented?
Have the changes to the Mental Health Act been detrimental
or helpful? What alternatives are available and seen as
useful to people from BME communities who have been, or who
are currently at risk of being detained? Where do solutions
lie? Should we be focusing on tackling racism in society and
addressing institutional racism in particular within mental
health services?

18) ISLAM AS A DISCURSIVE TRADITION

Dates: Monday 24th May & Monday 31st May 2010
Time: 6.30 pm - 8.30 pm
Venue: Room 4A, Chesham Building, King's College London, Strand,
London, WC2R 2LS

A series of exciting conversations have been initiated to explore
the futures that have become possible as a result of the Critical
Reading Group, which is now in its third year. The themes for the
next few months will revolve around important questions regarding
the nature and direction of the Islamic Body. Specifically, the
programme for these two sessions focuses on Islam as a Discursive
Tradition, i.e. a historically evolving set of discourses embodied
in the practices and institutions of Islamic societies and, thus,
deeply overlapping with the material lives of those that inhabit
them. Could ifta', i.e. the process whereby Islamic verdicts are
issued on contemporary matters, be considered part of the Islamic
discursive tradition? Join us to discuss this and related matters.

Canary Wharf Muslim Association (WharfMA) presents:

19) SURAH AL-BAQARAH: THE MINI-QUR’AN - PART 1

with Ustadh Hafiz Abdullah Muhammad*

Date:
Part 1: Tuesday 25th May 2010
Time: 6pm - 9pm
Venue: Idea Store Canary Wharf, Churchill Place,
Canary Wharf, London E14 5RB

Surah al-Baqarah (The Cow] is the second chapter of the Qur'an consisting
of 286 verses (Ayat). Whilst Surah al-Fatihah is an ‘introduction’ to the
Qur’an, Surah al-Baqarah is a ‘summary’ of the entire Qur’an and regarded
as the ‘mini-Qur’an’ as it deals with all the essential contents of the
Qur’an such as faith, history, rituals (purity, prayer, charity, fasting
& Hajj) and laws (food, marriage, divorce, inheritance & Jihad). Both
Surahs are also complementary; in the first Surah one asks for Guidance
whilst the second Surah begins by stating that “it is a Guide for the
God-conscious”. Taqwa or God-consciousness is an underlying theme
throughout the Surah.

Surah al-Baqarah is a unique Surah as it is the longest chapter
in the Qur’an, it contains the ‘greatest verse in the Qur’an’ (v.255),
the very final Revelation (v.281) and the longest verse in the Qur’an
(v.282). Like Surah al-Fatihah and Ayatul Kursi, the last two verses
of this Surah are also of special importance. This Surah is an early
Medinan Surah which was almost completely revealed within the first
two years in Madinah. Among the virtues of this Surah is that ‘Satan
flees from a house in which Surah al-Baqarah is read’. In another
Hadith we are told: “Read Surah al-Baqarah, because in having it
there is blessing, and in ignoring there is a sorrow”.

Surah al-Baqarah is spread over Juz 1, Juz 2 and the first half
of Juz 3. We will study the Surah in two sessions. The first session
will cover Juz 1 which predominantly deals with faith, righteousness
and lesson to be learnt from history and Juz 2 which predominantly
deals with laws which were laid down for the foundation of the
first Islamic State in Madinah. The second session will cover
Juz 3 inc. Ayatul Kursi (Verse of the Throne) and the concluding
verses of the Surah.

All welcome - Notes included
Please bring a copy of the Quran with you.
Prayer facilities will be provided

Attendance of previous sessions not necessary

21) OBAMA’S FOREIGN POLICY IS A GIFT TO HIS ENEMIES

Date: Thursday 27th May 2010
Time: 6.45pm - 8.30pm
Venue: Methodist Central Hall Westminster,Storey's Gate
London SW1H 9NH

He came to power promising that his outstretched hand would heal the rifts with
other nations; that engagement, not belligerence, was the way to solve the
world’s
problems. Since then, Iran and North Korea have gone ahead with nuclear tests,
Afghanistan is in turmoil and the countries of Eastern Europe feel he has
deserted
them. Has President Obama’s ‘softly, softly’ policy made America look feeble in
the
eyes of its enemies? Is his much vaunted ‘nice-guy’ approach just appeasement in

another guise?

  1. The new middle class comprises the embryonic legitimate business elite – entrepreneurs, professionals and managers – but not the remnants of the financially strapped intelligentsia. It is brawn with little brains. In dissonance with western Europe, according to a survey published in the last two years by Expert magazine, the majority of its members are nationalistic, authoritarian and xenophobic. Their self-interested economic liberalism is coupled with social and political intolerance. But two thirds of them support some kind of welfare state.

NGO’s are proponents of Western values – women’s lib, human rights, civil rights, the protection of minorities, freedom, equality. Not everyone finds this liberal menu palatable. The arrival of NGO’s often provokes social polarization and cultural clashes. Traditionalists in Bangladesh, nationalists in Macedonia, religious zealots in Israel, security forces everywhere, and almost all politicians find NGO’s irritating and bothersome.
