Russia moves into trade surplus with China

By Sergei Blagov Russia has repeatedly pledged to expand its trade with China, as the Kremlin appeared to view these commercial ties as an important indicator of what was officially described as a bilateral strategic partnership. Although bilateral trade was adversely affected by the global economic downturn, Moscow also achieved a sizable surplus in its trade with China in 2009. Last year, bilateral trade between Russia and China declined 32% to US$38.8 billion, according to Russian and Chinese statistics. Chinese exports to Russia fell 47% in the year to $17.5 billion, according to Russia’s trade representative in Beijing, Sergei // … Continue reading Russia moves into trade surplus with China

Mullahs In Space! – Iran’s echoes of another cosmic plan

By Dmitry Shlapentokh While Iran is more usually in the news over claims that it is trying to develop nuclear weapons, recent success in the nation’s nascent space program stands as testament to cosmic ambitions. Iranian authorities described the February 3 launch of a Kavoshgar-3 rocket as part of a space research project. A manned mission would follow the experimental capsule – which contained a mouse, a turtle and worms – into orbit, they said. “[Iranian] scientists will be sent into space and they will observe the universe from there,” President Mahmud Ahmadinejad said on February 3 as he unveiled … Continue reading Mullahs In Space! – Iran’s echoes of another cosmic plan

The case for an Israeli strike against Iran

By Spengler The fact that Ha’aretz, Israel’s left-leaning daily, found it necessary on February 17 to warn the Benjamin Netanyahu government not to attack Iran [1] strongly suggests that the option is on the table. It seems clear that the administration of US President Barack Obama never will use force against Iran, despite the Iranian regime’s open contempt for Washington and the international community. US Secretary of State Clinton this week responded with a direct “no” – not “all options are on the table” – when asked if America was planning a military strike. During a February 16 visit to … Continue reading The case for an Israeli strike against Iran

The meaning of Marjah?

By Kamran Bokhari, Peter Zeihan and Nathan Hughes On February 13, some 6,000 United States Marines, soldiers and Afghan National Army troops launched a sustained assault on the town of Marjah in Helmand province. Until this latest offensive, the US and North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) effort in Afghanistan had been constrained by other considerations, most notably Iraq. Western forces viewed the Afghan conflict as a matter of holding the line or pursuing targets of opportunity. But now, armed with larger forces and a new strategy, the war – the real war – has begun. The most recent offensive – … Continue reading The meaning of Marjah?

Pauline Hanson – Australian Extremist Fanatic moving to the UK!

The enduring legacy of Pauline Hanson Ironically, the Australian anti-migrant campaigner is moving to the UK – but back in her homeland, things are less amusing Tim Soutphommasane guardian.co.uk Pauline Hanson says Australia is no longer a land of opportunity. Photograph: Bradley Kanaris/Getty Images Since losing her seat in national parliament, Pauline Hanson has been an unlikely source of entertainment for Australians. There was her TV appearance on Dancing with the Stars, the Aussie version of Strictly Come Dancing, and last year raunchy pictures, supposedly taken of her more than three decades ago, were widely circulated in the Australian press … Continue reading Pauline Hanson – Australian Extremist Fanatic moving to the UK!

How do we deal with corporate blood sucking vampires?

Reining in the corporate monster Big business must be forced to temper its obsession with profit and align corporate practice with social justice and democracy Prem Sikka Despite Britain having only just emerged from recession, Barclays Bank has reported profits of £11.6bn. Its 23,000 investment bankers will collect bonuses of £2bn, mostly made from gambling with other people’s monies. The bonus levy of £225m in taxes might also help the government, but soaring credit card rates and lack of bank lending will put dampener on any economic recovery. Barclays’s gag on newspapers, alleged tax avoidance and role in creating new … Continue reading How do we deal with corporate blood sucking vampires?

Dr Aafia’s appeal that unites the Takfir Mullah with the Westernised whiskey drinkers

By Rafia Zakaria The explosive mix of appearing to be the obedient Muslim woman clad in burka and a would-be assassin defying the US make Dr Aafia Siddiqui irresistible as a heroine and an icon. But should such defiance be the only mark of heroism in our society? – File photo dawn THE aftermath of Dr Aafia Siddiqui’s conviction nearly two weeks ago in a New York courtroom has seen several protests. On Feb 13, students from universities all over Islamabad congregated at Aapbara Chowk and demanded her release, while pointing out the silence of human rights groups. A day … Continue reading Dr Aafia’s appeal that unites the Takfir Mullah with the Westernised whiskey drinkers

Morality and atheism

Irfan Husain dawn The belief in a god is generally quite low in all the major European countries.—Photo by Reuters Consider this demographic projection for the UK, and ponder its implications for a moment: within five years, the majority of babies will be born to unmarried parents. However, before you put this down to yet another example of Western immorality, just remember that all these babies will have the same legal rights as those born to married couples. This trend is part of the wider decline of marriage as an institution. According to a recent study, the figures for people … Continue reading Morality and atheism

The men and the myths

Posted by Murtaza Ali Jafri I hate to break to all the women out there, but men are not stupid, boorish, or simply clueless (well, at least 90 per cent of the time). These are regrettable (yet mutually advantageous) myths. I will confirm that women are highly complex creatures blessed with tremendous faculties that allow for a great deal of lateral, profound, and esoteric thinking, most of which men are highly unlikely to ever understand, let alone appreciate. But the fact is, men aren’t as limited as women like to believe. It is in Pakistani men’s interest to perpetuate certain … Continue reading The men and the myths
