ISIS and the Social Media Call for Female Jihadis: Love & Romance as Strong Motivators

Originally posted on Anne Speckhard, Ph.D.:
“Love” and romance are often underestimated motivators for joining the militant jihad as recently witnessed in the case of Denver teen, Shannon Maureen Conley who was arrested April 8, 2014 while trying to board a flight in Denver with the goal of traveling to Syria to join ISIS.  Nineteen-year-old Conley, who converted to Islam while a junior in high school, had struck up an online romance with a thirty-two year old Tunisian ISIS fighter who she communicated with via Skype.  Self-educated in militant jihad ala the “University of Jihad” presently available to all… Continue reading ISIS and the Social Media Call for Female Jihadis: Love & Romance as Strong Motivators

Racist Societies: Israel and the U.S

by ROBERT FANTINA One wonders how the racism that is so much a part of U.S. and Israeli society towards the Palestinians can have such strength. Racism against African-Americans in both countries is strong (witness the frequent shootings of black youths by whites in the United States, and the very high acquittal rates of those perpetrators, if they are even charged with a crime, and Israel’s rampant violence again people of African descent), and now racism is financing genocide. A look at some of the possible factors is interesting, frightening and disheartening. 1)   Palestinians speak Arabic. An estimated 295,000,000 … Continue reading Racist Societies: Israel and the U.S

A Prayer for Pardon

by Sheikh Salman al-Oadah My Lord! I praise you, and You are most worthy of praise. I extol Your goodness in every way.I thank you for everything You have given me, as well as for what You have withheld from me. What You withhold from me is also a gift, for You know me better than I know myself. I beseech You to increase my determination to come to the aid of the oppressed, to help the weak, and give shelter to the displaced. Let me never find myself among the ranks of the oppressors, sinners, tyrants, and liars. O … Continue reading A Prayer for Pardon

Social media seduces jihadist recruits far more effectively than old fashioned ‘hate preachers’

Online advertising: Images of jihadists posing with guns play a powerful part in recruitment The landscape of jihad is wildly different today from just a decade ago. Then we had known centres of radical activism like the Finsbury Park Mosque and hate preachers such as Omar Bakri Mohammed and Abu Hamza. All these preachers have now been removed from the country. But in many respects preachers and mosques no longer matter. Much has been written about the role of the internet in the radicalisation of some Muslims. The ubiquity of social media has meant that hundreds of foreign fighters now … Continue reading Social media seduces jihadist recruits far more effectively than old fashioned ‘hate preachers’

Birmingham or London Militant? : Who ‘Beheaded Journalist James Foley’ Spoke With A ‘British Accent’

A video showing the apparent beheading of a US journalist by an Islamic State fighter speaking with a British accent appears to be genuine and is “an appalling example of the brutality of this organisation, Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond has said. US authorities are investigating the video posted to YouTube on Tuesday purporting the beheading of journalist James Foley, who went missing in Syria in 2012. Hammond said the video had not been verified but “all the hallmarks point to it being genuine” and acknowledged that the killer spoke with a British accent. The US Needs to Increase Its Role in the Israeli-Palestinian Peace Process, Not Lessen It

As a consequence of the hostilities in and around the Gaza strip this summer, the debate on the United States’ involvement in the peace process (and to some extent its global role in general) have resurfaced. Criticism of US mediation ranges from accusations of bias in Washington to suggestions that US brokering is preventing direct talks between the two parties. There is a growing trend among not just media commentators and the general public that the US should “mind its own business” or take a back seat vis-a-vis the peace process, but also among international relations enthusiasts and indeed within … Continue reading The US Needs to Increase Its Role in the Israeli-Palestinian Peace Process, Not Lessen It

Hamas, Palestine and the Geopolitics of Resistance

By Sam Muhho   The number one goal of any empire is to divide. The reason for this is the fact that empire’s objective is to consolidate power and in order to do so, it must make sure that no other geopolitical competitor is allowed to consolidate its own power for whatever objective, be it beneficial to the people or not. In the case of the Middle East, the fractious and multi-faceted ethnic, religious, and historical background of this ever-shifting region provides a fertile ground for the incubation of modern-day neo-imperialist subversion and covert destabilization. This can take a wide array … Continue reading Hamas, Palestine and the Geopolitics of Resistance
