Our source of national pride?

Posted by Sana Saleem  Nationalism is best understood in contrast to patriotism. Patriotism is simply love for one’s country, whereas nationalism is the sense that one’s nation is the best, often because it is more sacred than other nations. For the past few months, ‘Wake Up Pakistan’ – a campaign targeting this country’s youth – has been making waves both in the mainstream and social media. The campaign aims to bring about an ideological revolution in Pakistan: Pakistan today is in the eyes of the world, what we do and what we don’t will decide the future of Pakistan and … Continue reading Our source of national pride?

The ‘other’ Jewish lobby

By Rafia Zakaria The irony of Dr Aafia’s allegations against Jewish jurors is exacerbated further when one considers the fact that Jewish American activists and lawyers have been at the forefront of ensuring that those imprisoned in Guantanamo and other terrorism suspects are produced in courts of law. –File During the process of jury selection for her trial for attempted murder in New York, Dr Aafia Siddiqui alleged that she could not get a fair trial because she felt “everyone here is” a Jew. She said she would “boycott” the trial unless the Jews on the jury were removed. Because … Continue reading The ‘other’ Jewish lobby

Wole Soyinka’s – how to angle invites for posh parties!

Is England really a “cesspit” and breeding ground for fundamentalist Muslims, as the Nobel laureate has it?   Riazat Butt guardian.co.uk, Wole Soyinka has launched a blistering attack on England claiming it is a “cesspit” and a breeding ground for fundamentalist Muslims. Well, he has a point. Doesn’t he? The question mark is mischief making on my part but a lot of people will be nodding their heads in agreement with the words of the Nobel laureate. That they come from a man so erudite and feted adds gravitas to the outburst. He was asked how he felt about Nigeria being … Continue reading Wole Soyinka’s – how to angle invites for posh parties!

Homegrown Radicals: Complacency is not an Option

by Parvez Ahmed*  An army major at Fort Hood guns down fellow soldiers, five young men arrested after traveling to Pakistan to join radical elements, a coffee vendor charged in a New York terror plot and a terrorism suspect in North Carolina is arrested. Such headlines involving American Muslims ought to be a source of concern for the community. A recent scholarly report by researchers at Duke University and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill asserts that the number of American Muslims vulnerable to radicalization is small but not negligible. Since 9-11, 139 American Muslims have committed terrorist acts … Continue reading Homegrown Radicals: Complacency is not an Option

John Lennon’s power for the people

Whether or not Lennon did regret his associations with the radical left, I still remember his beliefs – and his voice – fondly Tariq Ali guardian.co.uk, Radical and chic: John Lennon and Yoko Ono and with black power leader Michael X at his house in Holloway, 4 February 1970. Photograph: Getty  Maurice Hindle’s comments (‘Response’, The Guardian, 2 February,) raise some interesting questions regarding John Lennon‘s politics. For the record, it might be useful to point out that it was Lennon who rang and wanted a conversation, a year after the 1969 exchange on the Beatle’s album Revolution in the … Continue reading John Lennon’s power for the people

An odious view, indeed. But I’m with Pope Benedict on this one

The pope’s right to practise what he preaches needs defending in the face of Harriet Harman’s intolerant equalities bill   Simon Jenkins guardian.co.uk, The pope is right and Harriet Harman is wrong. I might prefer the opposite to be the case but, on the matter in hand, Voltaire’s principle should apply. The Roman Catholic church may be a hotbed of religious prejudice, indoctrination and, somewhere in the United Kingdom, social division. But faced with Harriet Harman’s equality bill and her utopian campaign to straighten all the rough timber of mankind, the pope’s right to practise what he preaches needs defending. … Continue reading An odious view, indeed. Mexican Fisherman Meets Harvard MBA

A vacationing American businessman standing on the pier of a quaint coastal fishing village in southern Mexico watched as a small boat with just one young Mexican fisherman pulled into the dock. Inside the small boat were several large yellowfin tuna. Enjoying the warmth of the early afternoon sun, the American complimented the Mexican on the quality of his fish. “How long did it take you to catch them?” the American casually asked. “Oh, a few hours,” the Mexican fisherman replied. “Why don’t you stay out longer and catch more fish?” the American businessman then asked. The Mexican warmly replied, … Continue reading Mexican Fisherman Meets Harvard MBA
