Free Ejup Ganic Now!

In what can only be described as a cynically political move, former Bosnian Vice President, Dr Ejup Ganic, was arrested upon his arrival at Heathrow Airport on 1st March. During the Serb aggression against the Bosnians and Croats, Ganic was accused by the Serbs as presiding over the “massacre” of Serbian soldiers that were laying siege to the Bosnian capital, Sarajevo, during May 1992. As the Serb soldiers were being evacuated in a deal negotiated by Ganic the chaotic scenes resulted in crossfire and 40 Serb troops were killed. The incident was investigated by the International War Crimes Tribunal at The … Continue reading Free Ejup Ganic Now!

Nepal running out of time

By Dhruba Adhikary KATHMANDU – Nepal’s transition from a Hindu monarchy to a secular republic is not going smoothly, and not just over the fast-approaching May 28 deadline for the nation’s new constitution. The opposition Maoists insist that federal states be created on an ethnic basis, while the ruling Nepali Congress party and its coalition partner believe the states should be formed on a geographic basis. The Constituent Assembly was formed after a 2008 election when … Continue reading Nepal running out of time

Have you ever been asked ‘So tell me, really where are you from?’

It may not be racist, but it’s a question I’m tired of hearing Looking a bit brown still means being asked where you’re from. So here’s a ready-made answer for the overly curious Ariane Sherine The Guardian Last weekend, I had The Conversation for the 3,897th time – and this time, it took place in central London just two roads away from the hospital where I was born. As usual, it went like this: Stranger: Where are you from? [Translation: You look a bit brown. Why are you brown?] Me: London. Stranger: No, where are you really from? [Translation: You … Continue reading Have you ever been asked ‘So tell me, really where are you from?’

The virtues of money-laundering

From Beirut to the Swiss cases —Munir Attaullah The attorney general is a presidential appointee and all official acts of the Government of Pakistan abroad are technically carried out in the name of the president. So, how will the Swiss legal authorities react to the paradoxical situation of a president filing suit against himself? At my age, there is an easily reached limit to pursuing what euphemistically might be termed ‘frivolous activities’. The Nike slogan, and those TV ads for certain US soft drinks notwithstanding, it is now — far more often than not — enervating hard work trying to … Continue reading The virtues of money-laundering
