Deep freeze?

Shahzad Chaudhry: There is an inherent proclivity within the Pakistani civil society and political elites to appear progressive and liberated through seeking fraternal relations with India. This is more of a reactive impulse to the overbearing and dominating position that the Pakistani establishment tends to hold over the Pakistani state structures India and Pakistan still reside in mediaeval times. Their responses are primordial, at least in interacting with each other, and no amount of education, progress and foresight dents the naturally held instinct. This, in fact, is a fit case for an anthropologic study: how do humans behave carnivorous at … Continue reading Deep freeze?

President Zardari and his survival

Dr Syed Mansoor Hussain Frankly, eight odd years of incarceration during which he was reported to have been tortured is no joke. His detractors often claim that he spent most of his jail time in comfortable surroundings. But a loss of freedom is exactly that, a loss of freedom President Zardari is being offered much advice on how to survive, so I decided to put in my two cents worth. In my opinion, the single most important part of survival is good health. When President Zardari was released after having spent almost eight years in jails of different sorts and … Continue reading President Zardari and his survival

Closet Taliban – Punjab?

It is a matter of extreme concern that a provincial law minister has been seen pandering to a banned organisation’s senior leader. Rana Sanaullah, who happens to be Punjab’s Law Minister, either forgot his own designation during his recent visit to Jhang or was suffering from amnesia when he took Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan (SSP) leader Maulana Muhammad Ahmed Ludhianvi on a ride in his car. He also visited the banned organisation’s madrassa. Is it not ironic that the law minister gave full protocol to a sectarian outfit’s leader, an organisation that has officially been banned by the government? Thus it was … Continue reading Closet Taliban – Punjab?

Where are the pictures of America’s First Suicide Bomber?

The US government and its propaganda ministry do not want to call Joseph Stack a terrorist. ‘Terrorist’ is a term the government reserves for Muslims. But Stack experienced the same frustrations and emotions as Muslims who can’t take it any longer, notes Paul Craig Roberts. Joseph Stack, frustrated American, flew his airplane into an Austin, Texas, office building. He was one of the 79 percent of Americans who have given up on “their” government. The latest Rasmussen Poll indicates that the vast majority of Americans are convinced that “their” government is totally unresponsive to them, their concerns, and their needs. Rasmussen … Continue reading Where are the pictures of America’s First Suicide Bomber?

Preventing violent extremism in Britain

By Sam Knight In the middle of Rochdale is the Milkstone Road. It is the sort of street that runs through ethnically mixed British towns. There is a halal butcher; a travel agent cum bookshop cum general store, its windows lined with razors and pictures of the hajj; two pubs that face each other across a narrow intersection. And, behind a set of wooden gates, is a mosque. On a school night in November, the mosque’s imam, a spectacled, energetic man called Irfan Chishti, was teaching in an upstairs room. Two dozen boys were spread out on the floor before … Continue reading Preventing violent extremism in Britain

The Smearing of Rashad Hussain – An American Muslim!

Rashad Hussain’s appointment as the Obama administration’s  envoy to the Organization of Islamic Countries, part of the broader strategy of outreach to the Muslim world, was as welcome as it was overdue.  Hussain, a lawyer who had been working in the White House counsel’s office and also working with the NSC on Muslim engagement, seemed an excellent pick.   The announcement in Doha showed a renewed sense of urgency about delivering on the promise of Obama’s Cairo speech to the Muslim world. It is good to see a Muslim appointed to such a position.  After the failed Christmas bombing most would agree … Continue reading The Smearing of Rashad Hussain – An American Muslim!

Suicide Bombers practice ‘Bombshell Boobs’

Shoes failed flat out. Then there was a glitch in the underwear. So what next for the fashionable terrorist with no baggage and a one-way ticket to paradise? If this was the plot for a Monty Python sketch, why not bring in a sexy woman with big siliconcocted breasts? Then replace the silicon with a more volatile substance, turn the nipple into a fuse and it’s bombs away. Well, reports are now flowing through cyberspace about British intelligence intercepting Al-Qaeda cell phone chatter about this very thing. Here is one from February 5 in the online version of the Detroit Free … Continue reading Suicide Bombers practice ‘Bombshell Boobs’
