The Trojan Mullahs for TTP

Most terrorist organisations rely on propaganda to divide masses, and convolute issues which demand clarity as a prerequisite for progress. The psychological aspect of a war or an insurgency cannot be undermined, at least not without facing serious consequences. Unlike the state, the TTP has learned from its experiences. Every contest between the TTP and the armed forces of Pakistan has resulted in the latter emerging decisively victorious. This imbalance of power has compelled the terrorists to look beyond their guns for strength, and they have successfully discovered it; in us. The TTP is heavily reliant on inaction from the … Continue reading The Trojan Mullahs for TTP

Afghanistan: as China forges new alliances, a new Great Game has begun A common interest in central Asia over Uighur and Taliban militancy is bringing together Beijing and the United States   by William Dalrymple of The Guardian A Chinese security officer scrutinises pedestrians in Urumqi, the capital of the Uighur autonomous region of Xinjiang. War On Terror – LOST?

by PATRICK COCKBURN   Al-Qa’ida, the second act: Why the global ‘war on terror’ went wrong In 2014 al-Qa’ida-type groups are numerous and powerful… In other words, the ‘war on terror’ has demonstrably failed     It is now 12-and-a-half years since the September 11 attacks that put al-Qa’ida firmly on the map of global terrorism. The US has spent billions of dollars on its ‘war on terror’ to counter the threat and succeeded in killing Osama bin Laden three years ago. And yet al-Qa’ida-type groups are arguably stronger than ever now, especially in Syria and Iraq where they control an … Continue reading War On Terror – LOST?

A donkey loaded with books is still a donkey.

Loads of books? The rot of distorted religious beliefs has contaminated Pakistani society. Just one example of this was a wedding I attended in June last year. A mullah from an important mosque was asked to perform the ceremonies at the bride’s house. He grasped the opportunity to inflict a lengthy homily about the sanctity of marriage on the unfortunate guests. Marital harmony, he insisted, was founded on the subservience of woman to man because Eve was created from the rib of Adam. The cleric had obviously read, or had been told about, the story of creation as it appears in the … Continue reading A donkey loaded with books is still a donkey.

The Kharijites and their impact on Contemporary Islam

Shaykh Seraj Hendricks Much of the excesses and extremism that we observe today may be understood in terms of the origins and unfolding of Kharijism during the first few centuries of Islam. While a number of writers – both past and present – are of the opinion that this sect is extinct, others are of the view that its not. I share the latter view. The influences of this sect have always been present, in different guises and in varying degrees, throughout the history of Islam. But it appears to have gained a renewed momentum with the emergence of Muhammad … Continue reading The Kharijites and their impact on Contemporary Islam

The Mullahs of Pakistan are WRONG!

The CII ruling is wrong    Imran Ahsan Nyazee The Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) has issued a ruling to the effect that a restriction placed on the unfettered Islamic right of a husband to take a second (or third or fourth) wife without seeking permission of the existing wife is wrong, and should be removed.  The issue runs much deeper than a mere seeking of permission from the first wife. It involves the methodology of the CII in interpreting the texts of the Quran and the Sunnah. Theoretically, the CII should be following the Hanafi system of interpretation, which … Continue reading The Mullahs of Pakistan are WRONG!

Dialogue of mutual benefit for Pakistan & Afghanistan at last?

The Pakistan-Afghanistan entente cordiale Despite the difficulty of facing regular casualties and unease among some military generals, Pakistan is pressing for peace talks with militants, a stance backed by several political parties. Renewed negotiations with the Taliban are coming at a juncture when many developments are going on in the South Asian region. The exit of US troops, the signing of a crucial security agreement, the Bilateral Security Agreement (BSA), between Kabul and the US and peace talks with the Afghan Taliban are just some of the major issues that will influence Pakistan and its political situation in the months … Continue reading Dialogue of mutual benefit for Pakistan & Afghanistan at last?

Ahrar-ul-Hind – Attock Taliban!

Talks with the purveyors of terror     by S Iftikhar Murshed The people of Pakistan have grown accustomed to soul-shattering tragedy, which has been their constant companion for more than a decade. The National Internal Security Policy 2013-2018 announced by Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan on February 26 admits that 48,994 people have been killed in terrorist violence since 2001. The death toll keeps mounting and it seems that only haunting funeral dirges and requiems for the souls of the dead are appropriate for this land that has bled so profusely and for so long.  On Monday the … Continue reading Ahrar-ul-Hind – Attock Taliban!
