Sun Tzu & Defending Your Self (& Loved Ones)

“The Art of War teaches us not to rely on the likelihood of the enemy’s not coming , but on our own readiness to receive him; not on the chance of his not attacking, but rather on the fact that we have made our position unassailable.” – Sun Tzu

The aim of Krav Maga is to counteract a threat as quickly as possible. The goal is to dominate and immobilise an attacker quickly. The reason many learn self defence is simply to preserve their own life but they don’t learn actual techniques to defend themselves.

Krav Maga along with Target Focus Training teaches actual techniques that you can use at the ready if attacked. I don’t have anything against normal martial arts as they teach calmness, centering and confidence but many a time when attacked off guard many who have traditional martial artists do not know how to respond quickly and with focus on defeating the opponent – unless they are martial arts masters.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.” – Sun Tzu

Krav Maga is a tactical martial art/self-defense system combining elements of boxing, judo, jujitsu, and aikido. Its designed to be put to use quickly with simultaneous defence and attack tools combining offensive strikes with defensive attacks. When an enemy engages us we must disrupt his attack and simultaneously counterattack with focus on defeating him.

Usually when we fight back with intense focus the opportunistic opponent will run away but sometimes the attacker will react to our counterattacks, to which we should respond with more focused techniques until the attacker no longer remains a threat – Target Focus Training and the techniques of Tim Larkin (google) will teach this. In close combat we must act instictively and not rely on a pre-set routine as normal martial arts teach us. When responding to an attack we need to quickly find the enemies vulnerable points and win this battle – in learning Krav Maga or Target Focus Training I recommend the study of Art of War by Sun Tzu alongside.

Martial arts teach us to focus on vulnerable soft tissue and pressure points – Krav Maga techniques emphasis on attacking vulnerable soft tissue and pressure points. We must remember that many attackers attack because they are criminally minded weak individuals and seek vulnerable victims and they will not expect a response from someone they considered vulnerable who is not interested in being a victim who is trained to defend him/ herself with intense force and focus. When fighting back it usually takes the attacker off-guard, doing damage to him (only in defending yourself in a limited way until the police come to your rescue) is something he will not expect – after all you were considered ‘vulnerable’ when attacked.

“To know your Enemy, you must become your Enemy.”
― Sun Tzu

Criminals who violently attack they consider weaker do not follow a code of chivalry — they want to hurt or worse kill so why give them the courtesy of not punching them in the groin at least (not pre-meditated but only in the heat of being attacked)? After all its to save your life or your loved ones. But of course we are in the UK, we are British and reserved so as soon as an attacker surrenders you should hold him until the police come – or if he runs remember what he looks like so you can give a description to the police so they can arrest him.
